Reflection on storytelling
Describe a meaningful learning experience that started with a story that you heard. What made it impactful for you? What senses did it appeal to? Did you recognize any of the storytelling techniques reviewed this week?
A Learning experience I had that start with a story happened in one of my psychology courses. That course is about psychological disorders, which talks about the symptoms, prevalence and treatment of different kinds of disorders. One of the key learning outcomes of this course is to arrive at a diagnosis for different cases based on what we learned in the class. I remembered once that my professor told us a story about a patient she had as a clinical psychologist, and she shared with us about what distinct symptoms a particular disorder will have and her personal experience about diagnosis and treating this disorder.
Compared to dull academic words, this story stimulated my interest and curiosity on the content and made me want to explore more about it. It is easier for me to remember a vivid story related to the content rather than what my textbook talks about. Also, by incorporating real life example, I can grasp the content better. One storytelling technique that the professor used is telling a personal story. Compared to telling other people’s story, telling a personal story makes the story more vivid and empathetic, and therefore listeners can make more connection to it. She also ended the story with a positive take away by telling us that she felt happy and got the sense of achievement by helping others, which also inspired me to learn more about the psychology.
After learning this module, I realized the power of telling a story. This skill can be applied into many situations such as teaching, making a public speech (which is really challenging for me), and even daily communication. The ability to craft and convey compelling narratives is a powerful tool, and I cannot wait to incorporate it into my life and study.
