WHAT IS THE LEARNING PURPOSE OF YOUR VIDEO?

The learning purpose of the video is to educate and provide some general information about Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). The video explains three key DSM-5 criteria for ADHD, which include inattention, hyperactivity and impulsivity, and symptoms that have to be pervasive and persistent for a specific duration. I also highlight the prevalence of this common disorder and mention some gender differences in terms of the diagnosis between boys and girls.

WHICH OF THE PRINCIPLES WE’VE COVERED THIS TERM (E.G., MAYER/UNIVERSAL DESIGN FOR LEARNING/COGNITIVE LOAD THEORY) DID YOU INCORPORATE INTO YOUR DESIGN AND WHY?

Because this video aimed to provide general information about ADHD, I assumed that my audience would not have prior knowledge about ADHD. In order to incorporate a Universal Design for Learning, I tried to explain the topic as clearly and easy to understand as much as possible, and I did not include any over-complicated content that might be difficult for viewers with other academic backgrounds to understand in a short video. This video was designed to minimize cognitive load by incorporating Cognitive Load Theory. I breaked down complex information into smaller segments and explain them one by one. For example, I explained three criteria for ADHD by using plain language and avoiding using hard terminologies. I also did not include any irrelevant or unnecessary information in the video, which might cause extraneous cognitive load. Also, I had Mayer’s principles of multimedia learning in mind when I made my slides and video. The Coherence Principle was used by only including graphics or texts which support the learning content in my slides. The Signalling Principle was used through making headers and using bold text in the slides to make the content easy to follow. In order to apply Voice Principle, I use my own voice to narrate and tried to speak loudly and clearly. I also used Redundancy Principle by only including key words in my slides to complement my spoken presentations to avoid unnecessary repetition; therefore, viewers would not feel overwhelmed while watching the video. By using all of these Mayer’s principle of multimedia learning, I wish to make my content more effective and engaging for my audience, which they can have a better learning experience.

WHAT WAS CHALLENGING ABOUT CAPTURING YOUR OWN VIDEO?

This was my first time to create an official video by myself. One thing I found challenging was organizing the content and recording this content by using different tools. Capturing my own video was not like screen recording, I had to consider how I incorporate different forms of information such as visual images and text all together in one video, and make sure the content flows logically. Also, choosing what content to include in my video and what images I could use to enhance learning was also a difficulty. Editing was another challenge for me because I did not have much experience in editing video, and it took me some time to explore how to use the editing app and started to edit it.

WHAT DID YOU FIND EASIEST?

The easiest part for me was to write the script for the video because I was familiar with the content, which was from my major psychology. I was really passionate about my topic, so it was not too hard for me to write a script about it, and I really hoped that my video would help people understand more about ADHD.

HOW WOULD YOU APPROACH CAPTURING VIDEO DIFFERENTLY NEXT TIME?

I will definitely pay more attention to polishing my video editing skills, so I do not need to spend a lot of time on editing and I could make a better video. I will try to use a better device to record it to improve my image quality. Additionally, I will think about ways to make my content more engaging for the general audience, not only those who have an interest in psychology. This might be done through what we learned in this module about storytelling to arouse the audience’s interest. All in all, I really learned a lot in making my own video and I hope I will make more progress in the future!
